PechaKucha: The Healing Garden Network

Presenting at the Evolver CoLab Event 2013

Presenting at the Evolver CoLab Event 2013

April 5, 2013

I’d never actually seen a PechaKucha presentation before so it was intriguing to present one at the Evolver CoLab.

Leading Vancouver culture crafters were invited to talk about their current projects in PechaKucha style.

This is a presentation format that allows many speakers to showcase their work because of how concise you must be.

Each speaker gets 6 minutes and 40 seconds.  (20 slides at 20 seconds each)

What an inspiring night of activism and engagement!

My presentation was about the Healing Garden Network, a community project that I started in October 2012.

Collaborating with community members, we are contributing towards the wellness of our tribe by addressing these 3 things:

1) Isolation:  People often feel isolated when they are in crisis because we don’t have established practices, rituals, traditions of being witnessed, held and supported by our community when we are really down in the hole.

2) Disconnection:  Some feel that they have a place in community only when they are in “good spirits” or “high performance” mode.  And those who try to help others can get overwhelmed because the situation requires a wider net of support.

Ironically, not long ago, the Vancouver Foundation study surveyed 275 charitable foundations and 100 community leaders to find out what their top issue was.  Surprisingly, it wasn’t “poverty or homelessness” but  isolation and disconnection.

3) Peer Support Training:  By providing holistic tools and wellness education to our community, we hope to nurture each person’s health and resilience.  In turn, individuals are encouraged to help each other as part of a grassroots network of peer counsel and humanity in action.

Our Mission Statement:

The Healing Garden is crafting a village culture that fosters human connection and belonging in both good and bad times.

By sharing our gifts, skills and resources in a peer support network, we wish to alleviate some of the isolation that many people feel in times of challenge.

We are weaving a resilient community through visible practices such as: mentorship, training, holistic knowledge, peer counseling, gift economies and rites of passage.

We are learning to help and care for each other with dignity, because it takes a village to witness, hold and love an individual. ♥
