A Little Woo at The Museum of Vancouver’s Sex in the City Exhibit

Littlewoo at the Museum of Vancouver

I’m so honored to be part of Vancouver history by representing burlesque culture in the Museum of Vancouver’s new exhibit called “Sex Talk In the City”!

The exhibit opened February 14, 2013 (nice timing) and will run til September 2013 so you have plenty of time to check it out if the history of sexuality in Vancouver has some interest for you.

I had fun socializing at the pre-opening night reception and it was a bit surreal to see one of my former burlesque outfits on display in the museum!

Last summer, I was interviewed about sexuality by filmmaker Gwen Haworth so you’ll also see little pieces of that interview in the video installation series that is in the exhibit.

There is a great collection of vintage vibrators on display (most on loan from Women’s Wares collection) and some eye-opening history around the evolution of sexual attitudes, sexual politics and sex education.

e.g. Did you know that “contraception” was a legislated crime up til the 1960’s?!!

The lead curator of the exhibit is the charming Viviane Gosselin whom I chatted with last summer as she laid out the museum’s design and planned content.  (and yes, i do have a fetish for museums)

And many thanks go to Amber Dawn for getting me involved!  Amber Dawn is a gifted writer, filmmaker, performance artist and activist whom I’m honored to know.  I deeply appreciate your invitation to take part in this historic exhibit!

From the Museum of Vancouver’s Website:

Sex Talk in the City is a multifaceted exhibition that teases out how people in Vancouver learn about sexuality, define pleasure, and respond to particular politics. Sex Talk in the City addresses issues of sexual expression, diversity, politics, and education in a fun, approachable, and thought-provoking manner. Sex isn’t only biological, it’s cultural.

Visitors can expect to gain context on the materials and stories they are exposed to every day – from online dating to safe sex ads to the pride parade. You’re sure to leave recalling your own “birds and bees” talk with your parents and other such stories.

Note: This exhibition contains coarse language, sexual language, sexually suggestive scenes, and nudity presented within a historical, political, and educational context. Sex Talk in the City is intended for adults and youth 15 years and older who choose to learn about or discuss how ideas about sexuality have influenced life in Vancouver. Children younger than 15 may visit accompanied by an adult.
