Art, Fantasy & Explorations

Evolution of My Apartment

I’ve always enjoyed seeing the evolution of not only people, but of physical spaces as well.  In 1999, I did some major home renovations where I and my partner at the time did much of the hands-on work (removing carpets, floorboards, sanding surfaces, masking and painting every room).  It was a wonderful transformation and I lived there for 7 years.

In 2006, I moved to my current location and after months of being too busy, I finally spent 4 solid days decorating and organizing my new home.  I took “before & after” photos as I wanted to remember how much could be done by one person in a few days if one is focused and willing to sweat…

In late September 2011, I was grateful to receive new flooring in my apartment (paid for by my very kind landlord).  As part of this upgrade, I hired a painter to do the dining/living room walls while I took on the decorating again.  In total, the flooring took over a week and the decor took a few days.  The temple space was ready in time for the first event here on October 11, 2011… I look forward to sharing many warm cozy evenings with my beloved friends and community in this revamped space!

Here are some PHOTOS of the 2006 renovations and the 2011 renovations:

Costuming Philosophy 101

If you are starting to get into costuming, be it for a performance or for a party, here are some of my philosophies on “wearable art” which I hope will inspire you!  My own history with costuming started in childhood – when I would rummage through the house to see what I could create with found materials.  Be it imitating Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” look, creating gelatin-based zombie scars or making a Snow White outfit – these childhood efforts were omens of my future explorations.  I guess I never wanted to stop playing Dress-Up!

1) Follow your fetishes and tickle your own aesthetic:  If you are excited to express through some costuming, then consider what tickles your fancy currently.  Think about themes you enjoy, archetypes that mean something to you and even favorite physical aspects in texture and color to determine your costume repertoire.  Choose something that really appeals to your personal aesthetic, not because it’s trendy.

The Legacy of Surrealism

by little woo, September 23, 2011

Though I never studied Art History in University, I was intuitively aware of a great personal resonance with the Surrealist Movement of the 1920-30′s. Throughout my life, Surrealist Art floated into my world via film, theatre, visual art, dreams and through of my own aesthetic tendencies.

When I went to see the current Vancouver Art Gallery Exhibit: The Colour of My Dreams  (THE SURREALIST REVOLUTION IN ART), it felt like I was reuniting with old friends. Many of the core principles and intentions of the movement were aligned with my own life journey and perspective. I saw so many points of astounding synchronicity in thought and interests that it felt like I am maybe a reincarnated Surrealist? Read more

A Mermaid’s Search for Pirates

at Burning Man 2006

In summer of 2005, I started dreaming of desert pirates and wondered if that was an omen that my mermaid fantasy would also mean the arrival of my soulmate in the guise of a pirate?  It was certainly über romantic but I wasn’t sure why I’d imagined the notion of “pirates in the desert”… until the summer of 2006 when I was preparing for my first Burning Man festival.

As I packed my costumes for this week-long carnival of art in Nevada, I realized that the dusty pirate of my fantasy might be found in this very festival set in the desert! However, realizing that I would be unable to walk in my mermaid costume, I decided to leave it at home and hoped that my pirate gear would somehow summon this soulmate… Read more

Dreams of A Little Mermaid

Childhood Beginnings
Many people enjoy the mythology of the mermaid at some point in their lives and my own fascination since childhood has never abated.  It started with a Chinese Anime comic book of Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid that I had.

Not the actual anime book from childhood, but close

The Zen of Unicorns

"Woo Unicorn drawing"
(drawing from 1990)

When I was 8 years old, I fell in love with Unicorns.  It was after I saw the film “The Last Unicorn” (Peter Beagle) and thereafter, I could not stop thinking about the story and the mythology.  For a “children’s film”, it had a very profound message that touched my soul with themes of transformation, unconditional love, integrity and the ability to see beyond form.  It had a happy ending that was also a very bittersweet ending.
